Mystery

This is the word that as a group we have taken from our story 'The Golden Key'. This is a story about a young boy who finds a golden key in the woods and then finds a box which the key fits into. This is where the story ends, allowing the reader to make there own decision at the end of the story. This story was the one as a group we all decided on and was something that we wanted to pursue.

The words that come to mind when I think of mystery are:

Colours- Blue, Black and Red

Complex

Murder and crime

Sounds- Whisper, Silence and heavy wind

Something that catches your attention

Texture- Silky, Slippery and rusty

Dark

Cold.

These were the words that I associated with Mystery. This allowed me to start to associate some words and some feelings which made it easier when coming to devise our pieces.

Memory

After a long time of working on the idea, we discovered that with the term mystery we could not find anywhere else to go with it. As of this as a group, we sat down again and started working on another idea. We re-read our stimuli and started to brainstorm some other ideas.

These were the words that we came up with.

Cold/ Warm

Happy/ Sad

Bittersweet

Sounds- Bells or windchimes

Texture- Silky, feathery, smooth.

Bio-object

" Without an actor, the object is just a lifeless wreck. On the other hand, the actors were conditioned by those same objects; their gestures and objects were influenced by the objects." (Kantor and Kobialka, 1993)

This video follows on from what we had been working on in class exploring objects. My group started working around the idea of using photo frames. I decided that I wanted to use limited movement and a small frame so that everything was focused on my face. I thought that this would allow everyone to focus completely on my face rather than any other part of my body.

Inanimate sounds

Within this video, I explored some inanimate sounds which I felt displayed mystery. The sounds I tried to explore were heavy breathing and a scream. These two sounds I tried to explore were as I felt these gave off the impression of mystery.

This video is a follow on from the first in which I wanted to focus more on the action and the object-choice rather than the inanimate sounds.

In this video, the audience can see me working with an A4 photo frame. I decided that I wanted to work with a bigger object as it would allow me to have more control and agency over the object. Using a bigger frame allowed me to have a more stable grip and I would be able to work more freely on the piece.

This video is part of one of the group videos I wanted to work on. Again I am only focusing on the Bio-object and the object rather than the inanimate sound. In this video, I wanted to explore the idea of trying to break out of the photo frame and the idea that I was trapped. My idea for this came from the idea of a memory being trapped within your brain and I wanted to explore this using a photo frame. This is an idea that I believe would be very effective to display both mystery and memories.

I decided that I wanted to work on some inanimate sounds that I felt explore both mystery and memory. I first started by using youtube and listening to some examples of inanimate sounds. After listening to a few clips I decided that I would try myself and would see what I could create. In my first attempt, I used heavy breathing and a scream which can be seen in my first Bio-object video. In this sound clip, I wanted to explore something else. This was heavy breathing, footsteps and a rattle of a chair. The reason I wanted to explore these was that I found them to be both mysterious and hold memory value to myself.

Reflection

Throughout this module, I have learnt a great deal about myself as an actor and as a person working in a collaborative theatre group. This module has pushed and forced me to become more physical, daring and risk-taking. This has led me to discover a great deal about how I work and how I create theatre. This experience has been one of the hardest I have ever had within my acting degree, and I have never felt more out of my comfort zone doing something completely new to me. This module has taught me that failure is a good thing and that learning from failure is the greatest way to achieve.
